Turnip Casserole
Description
The casserole begins by boiling peeled, diced turnips until fork-tender and mashing them smooth. Incorporating applesauce and melted butter adds moisture and richness, while brown sugar and cinnamon introduce gentle sweetness and warm spice. Panko breadcrumbs mixed into the mashed turnip add light texture. Salt and pepper season to taste.
This mixture is spread in a baking dish and topped with a streusel made from flour, brown sugar, and softened butter, which crisps and browns in the oven. Baking at 350°F for 35-40 minutes melds the flavors and produces a golden, crumbly top contrasted with the creamy turnip base.
The dish pairs well with hearty meals, offering a lightly sweet accompaniment that complements savory proteins. Its balance of textures provides a pleasing contrast between smooth and crunchy elements.
