Turnip Fries (Air Fryer or Baked)

Turnip Fries offer a crispy seasoned alternative to traditional fries using peeled turnips cut into slender strips and coated in olive oil and a blend of garlic salt, oregano, smoked paprika, onion powder, and cayenne pepper. They can be baked in the oven or cooked in an air fryer to achieve a golden, crispy texture with a subtly spicy, smoky flavor.

Description

This recipe transforms peeled turnips into fries by slicing them into uniform strips approximately 1/3 inch in width and lengthwise along the turnip. The strips are tossed with olive oil and a spice blend containing garlic salt, dried oregano, smoked paprika, onion powder, and cayenne pepper to balance savory, smoky, and mildly spicy notes.

For baking, the fries are spread on baking sheets in a single layer and roasted at a high oven temperature, flipped halfway through to develop crispness on all sides. Alternatively, the air fryer method calls for cooking small batches at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 10 minutes, with a shake at the midpoint, producing a similar crispy result more quickly.

Turnip fries make a flavorful side or snack for those looking to enjoy a vegetable-based alternative to potato fries, with a firm interior and crispy edges imparted by the seasoning and cooking method.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 8 turnips
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons garlic salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons oregano dried
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F conventional, or 400 degrees F convection if possible. Set out 1-2 large baking sheets, and a small bowl. Measure the garlic salt, oregano, paprika, onion powder, and cayenne pepper into the bowl and mix well.
  2. Peel the turnips and cut them into strips the length of each turnip, and 1/3 X 1/3 inch in width and height. Try to cut them as evenly as possible.
  3. Place the fries on the baking sheet and drizzle with oil. Toss to coat. Then sprinkle the seasoning mix over the fries and toss them to coat again.
  4. Spread the fries out evenly on the baking sheet, making sure they don't touch. Bake for 20 minutes. Flip the fries. Spread them out again, and bake for another 10 minutes, or until crispy. Serve warm.

Notes

  • For air fryer cooking, work in small single-layer batches and preheat the air fryer to 400°F; shake the basket halfway through the 10-minute cook time.
