Tzatziki Sauce
Description
The Tzatziki Sauce recipe features grated cucumber combined with creamy Greek yogurt, minced garlic, lemon juice, lemon zest, olive oil, and fresh dill. The preparation starts with peeling and grating the cucumber, then draining excess liquid to prevent the sauce from becoming watery. Incorporating the yogurt and lemon creates a smooth, creamy texture, while the dill adds a fresh herbal quality. The garlic introduces a gentle pungency that ties the flavors together.
This sauce is known for its cool, refreshing nature, making it suitable as a side or dip during warmer weather. It is commonly paired with pita bread, raw vegetables, and Mediterranean dishes like gyros or kebabs to add a balancing tang and creaminess.
Storing leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator keeps the sauce fresh for 3 to 4 days. Preparing it a day in advance can deepen the flavors and make serving easier. Its straightforward ingredients and method allow for quick assembly when needed.
Ingredients
- 2 cucumber Persian
- 1 cup Greek yogurt 2% fat
- 1 garlic minced, clove
- 3 tablespoons lemon juice plus 1 tablespoon zest
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 tablespoons dill chopped, fresh
- Pinch salt
Instructions
- Peel the cucumber and grate with the larger blades of a cheese grater. Drain any liquid from the cucumber and transfer to a medium size mixing bowl
- Add the yogurt, garlic, lemon zest, lemon juice and olive oil and stir to combine until creamy. Fold in the chopped dill and season with salt.
- Serve with pita, vegetables or on top of gyros or kebabs.
Notes
- Store leftover tzatziki in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days to maintain freshness.
- Making the sauce up to a day ahead enhances its flavors and saves preparation time on serving day.
- Drain the grated cucumber well to avoid excess liquid diluting the sauce's consistency.
