Vanilla Extract Homemade
Description
The recipe starts by preparing clean jars and slicing vanilla beans lengthwise to expose the seeds while keeping most of the bean intact. The split beans are folded and placed into jars. The jars are filled with vodka or bourbon to cover the beans completely. They are then sealed and stored in a cool, dark place.
Over 6 to 8 weeks, weekly shaking helps infuse the alcohol with the beans’ flavor. The resulting extract captures the rich aroma and taste of vanilla in a liquid form.
This homemade extract can be used as a substitute for commercial vanilla extract in baking and cooking, providing an authentic vanilla taste. The potency increases with time, making it advisable to start using after a few weeks but allowing full flavor development over months.
A general guideline mentioned is to use about 3 beans per 1 cup of vodka. The note specifies that for smaller jars, approximately 1.5 vanilla beans are used per 4-ounce jar.

- vodka or bourbon
- jars

- Fill you jar with vodka or bourbon covering your beans. Secure jar and place in a cool dark place.
- Give you bottle a shake once a week for 6 - 8 weeks.
Notes

- For smaller jars (approx. 4 oz), about 1.5 beans are sufficient.
- Store the jar in a cool, dark place and shake it weekly for 6 to 8 weeks.
- The extract strengthens with time, so longer infusion yields more intense vanilla flavor.
