Vanilla Syrup for Coffee

Vanilla Syrup for Coffee is a simple homemade sweetener made by dissolving equal parts sugar and water, infused with pure vanilla extract and vanilla bean seeds. This syrup adds a natural vanilla flavor and sweetness to coffee beverages, enhancing taste without the need for artificial additives.

Description

This syrup starts by heating sugar and water together until the sugar fully dissolves, forming a clear simple syrup base. Vanilla extract is added for flavor, accompanied by the seeds scraped from a vanilla bean pod, which steep in the syrup to deepen the vanilla profile. The whole vanilla bean pod is left in during heating to infuse additional aroma.

The quick heating allows vanilla flavors to meld without cooking off aroma compounds, and after cooling, the bean pod is removed, with straining optional for seed removal. The syrup is stored refrigerated and can be used to sweeten coffee drinks, improving complexity over plain sugar.

Vanilla bean syrup differs from extract alone by providing natural vanilla seeds and a richer vanilla character. It can be kept up to one week refrigerated and used as a sweetened flavor enhancer for various beverages.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 c. water
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract pure
  • 1 vanilla bean

Instructions

  1. Combine the sugar and water in a small saucepan on the stove over medium heat, stirring often, until the sugar is completely dissolved.
  2. Mix in vanilla extract to the simple syrup in the saucepan. Slice vanilla bean pod lengthwise and scrape the seeds into the syrup, then drop the whole bean pod in.
  3. Heat syrup through for 1 minute and then remove from heat.
  4. Cool syrup mixture for five minutes and then remove the vanilla bean, strain the seeds with a cheesecloth if desired and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.
  5. Serve it with your favorite coffee drinks.

Notes

  • You can replace the vanilla bean with additional pure vanilla extract, but the bean provides a more pronounced vanilla flavor.
  • Vanilla extract is concentrated and unsweetened, so directly adding it to coffee will not replicate the syrup's sweetness.
  • Straining vanilla seeds is optional; leaving them in the syrup adds visual interest and flavor.
  • Store the syrup in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.
