Vegan Carrot Hot Dogs (The Best Vegan Hot Dogs!)

These vegan carrot hot dogs transform thick carrots into smoky, flavorful hot dog substitutes by marinating them in a blend of vegetable broth, apple cider vinegar, soy sauce, Dijon mustard, smoked paprika, and liquid smoke. After marinating, the carrots are boiled until cooked through, with an option to char them on a grill for extra flavor and texture. Served in hot dog buns, they provide a plant-based alternative with a firm but tender bite and smoky seasoning.

Description

Vegan carrot hot dogs use peeled, similarly sized carrots as the base, marinated in a savory, tangy liquid combining vegetable broth, apple cider vinegar, soy sauce, Dijon mustard, smoked paprika, and liquid smoke. The marinade infuses the carrots with smoky and umami flavors reminiscent of traditional hot dogs.

After marinating for at least 30 minutes, or up to 12 hours for more intense flavor, the carrots are boiled in their marinade until tender but still firm enough to hold shape. Optionally, grilling or searing the cooked carrots adds char marks and deepens the smoky flavor, enhancing texture and appearance.

Served on hot dog buns with favorite condiments, these carrot hot dogs offer a plant-based, visually similar substitute to meat hot dogs with a unique vegetable base and distinctive smoky notes.

Practical tips from notes include ensuring carrots are not too thick to cook through easily; thicker carrots may require microwave softening. Marinating longer intensifies flavor, and leftovers store well refrigerated for several days.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 6 carrot each about the same size, aim for no more than ¾ inch thick
  • 1 cup vegetable broth 240 mL
  • ¼ cup apple cider vinegar 60 mL
  • 2 Tbsp soy sauce can sub tamari for gluten-free, 30 mL
  • 2 Tbsp Dijon mustard 30 g
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • ½ tsp liquid smoke
  • 6 hot dog buns

Instructions

  1. Marinate: Peel carrots and trim off the ends. Combine all remaining ingredients in a large shallow dish, then submerge the carrots in the liquid to marinate. Let sit for 30 minutes, flipping the carrots occasionally if they're not completely submerged.
  2. Boil: Transfer carrots and marinade to a large pot. If marinade does not cover the carrots, add water until the carrots are fully submerged. Bring to a boil, cover, and let cook for 15 to 20 minutes, or until carrots are cooked through. You should be able to pierce them with a fork, but they should not be so soft that they break easily.
  3. Serve: At this point you can serve the carrots, or you can sear them on a well-greased grill (or grill plate) to char the outsides. Serve on a hot dog bun with your favorite condiments!

Notes

  • For thicker carrots, finish softening by microwaving if boiling does not fully cook them through.
  • Marinate carrots for at least 30 minutes; longer marination up to 12 hours increases flavor intensity.
  • Prepare carrot hot dogs ahead by marinating in advance; cook just before serving.
  • Store leftover cooked carrot hot dogs in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days.
