Vegan Tofu Bacon

Vegan Tofu Bacon replicates smoky, savory bacon strips using extra firm tofu marinated with soy sauce, maple syrup, liquid smoke, and water, then baked to a crisp texture. The result is flavorful, slightly sweet, and smoky tofu slices with a crisp exterior and tender interior.

Description

This Vegan Tofu Bacon starts with pressing extra firm tofu to remove excess moisture, allowing it to absorb the marinade fully. The tofu is sliced very thinly to mimic bacon strips and baked initially to firm up.

A marinade made from soy sauce, pure maple syrup, liquid smoke, and water imparts a balance of saltiness, sweetness, and smokiness. After marinating and additional baking, the tofu develops a crispy edge with a tender, flavorful bite.

These tofu strips can serve as a plant-based alternative to bacon for sandwiches, salads, or breakfast dishes, providing a smoky, savory component without animal products.

Using a shallow baking pan helps catch any marinade drips, and cooling before serving allows the texture to set. Pressing the tofu properly is essential to get the right texture and flavor absorption.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 tablespoon canola oil or vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon of water
  • 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup
  • ½ tablespoon liquid smoke of
  • ½ tofu pressed, extra firm, 16-ounce package

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F, and lightly oil your 9x9 baking pans.
  2. Cut a tofu block in half lengthwise (you will only be using half). Then cut into thin strips lengthwise about ⅛ inch thick, or as thinly as possible. Optionally, you may then cut these strips in half lengthwise. Place tofu on the prepared pans and bake for 10 minutes. Flip and bake for 5 more minutes.
  3. In a small bowl, combine the soy sauce, water, pure maple syrup, and liquid smoke. Set aside.
  4. Remove tofu from the oven, pour liquid blend into the banking pan, and place into the oven for 10 minutes, flip, and bake for 5 more minutes. Allow to cool for 5 minutes before using.

Notes

  • Use extra firm or super firm tofu and press it well to remove moisture before slicing.
  • Slice tofu thinly for a more bacon-like texture and crispness.
  • Bake in a shallow pan to prevent marinade spillage and ensure even cooking.
