Vegan Worcestershire Sauce

Vegan Worcestershire Sauce is a homemade condiment made from malt vinegar, soy sauce, molasses, tamarind paste, and warming spices like allspice, garlic, onion powder, cloves, and black pepper. It mimics the tangy, sweet, and aromatic qualities of traditional Worcestershire sauce without animal products.

Description

This Vegan Worcestershire Sauce blends malt vinegar or apple cider vinegar with soy sauce, brown sugar, molasses, tamarind paste, and a mix of spices including allspice, garlic powder, onion powder, cloves, and black pepper. The ingredients are heated briefly to meld flavors, then cooled and stored to develop further complexity.

The sauce serves as a versatile flavor enhancer in marinades, dressings, and sauces where traditional Worcestershire sauce is called for but vegan alternatives are preferred. The use of tamarind paste adds tang and depth while the sweeteners balance acidity.

To maintain quality, stir ingredients well before heating, let cool completely before refrigerating, and strain to reduce sediment if desired. Store in sanitized containers and refrigerate for up to two months.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 cup malt vinegar or apple cider vinegar
  • cup soy sauce
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons molasses
  • 1 teaspoon tamarind paste
  • ½ teaspoon allspice
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • teaspoons cloves ground
  • teaspoon black pepper freshly ground

Instructions

  1. Add all of the ingredients to a small pot and stir well. Bring it to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 5 minutes.
  2. Allow to cool completely, then store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 months.

Notes

  • Stir ingredients thoroughly before heating to dissolve sugars and molasses completely.
  • Allow the sauce to cool fully after simmering to avoid burns and splatter.
  • Use sanitized containers for storing to prevent bacterial growth.
  • Strain multiple times if you prefer a clearer sauce without spice sediment.
