Very Fancy Sandwiches
Description
Very Fancy Sandwiches use day-old dark and light rye bread trimmed of crusts and cut into long slices. Layers of butter softened with mayonnaise and dried dill separate the rye slices arranged in alternating dark and light sequences. The assembled loaves are pressed firmly, wrapped in a damp cloth, and chilled until firm before slicing thinly into quarter to half-inch pieces, giving them an attractive party-style presentation. These sandwiches offer a soft but structured texture with mild butter and dill flavor, making them ideal for serving at formal occasions or tea parties.
The method relies on chilling the layered bread to achieve clean, dainty slices that hold together well. Buttering the bread layers not only adds flavor but helps bind the sandwich slices. The inclusion of dill adds a mild herbal note. Since the crusts are removed and the layering is precise, the resulting sandwiches have a neat, checkerboard appearance that enhances their visual appeal on a serving tray.
These sandwiches are suited for serving cold as appetizers or finger food. They can be arranged attractively on trays covered with a damp cloth and refrigerated until guests arrive. Their appearance and texture give an elegant touch to a party spread without complicated fillings or spreads.
