Vin Chaud - French Mulled Wine

Vin Chaud is a traditional French mulled wine infused with fresh spices, orange, and vanilla. The wine is gently simmered with cinnamon, cardamom, star anise, ginger, and nutmeg, absorbing warm aromatic flavors without boiling off the alcohol. Served warm and garnished with orange slices and cinnamon sticks, it offers a fragrant, spiced beverage enjoyed during colder seasons or celebrations.

Description

This Vin Chaud recipe blends a bottle of red wine with the fresh juices and slices of organic oranges, combined with sugar and a carefully balanced mix of spices including fresh ginger slices, a vanilla pod, cinnamon sticks, cardamom pods, star anise, and a pinch of nutmeg. These ingredients infuse the wine with rich, fragrant warmth.

The preparation involves heating the mixture gently on low heat, ensuring it simmers covered for about 20 minutes. This process extracts the aromatic qualities of the spices, blending them evenly while preserving the alcohol content by avoiding boiling. The resulting mulled wine is smooth, warmly spiced, and slightly sweet with citrus highlights.

Vin Chaud is served warm, strained into glasses and garnished with cinnamon sticks or orange slices to enhance presentation and aroma. It’s traditionally enjoyed as a comforting winter or holiday drink, offering cozy flavors that complement cold weather.

Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days and reheated gently over low heat to preserve flavor and alcohol. Spice blends may be customized to personal taste. Nutritional information varies with ingredient specifics.

  3. Combine red wine, orange pieces, sugar, and fresh ginger in a large pot. Heat under low heat.
  4. Slice the vanilla pod lengthwise, scrape out the seeds, and add both the seeds and the pod, along with the cinnamon sticks, cardamom pods, star anise, and a nutmeg to the pot.
  5. Simmer covered on low heat for 20 minutes to infuse flavors. Do not boil to avoid the alcohol evaporating.
  6. Remove from heat, strain into glasses, garnish with cinnamon sticks or orange slices, then serve.
