Waldorf Salad

Waldorf Salad combines crisp apple varieties, celery, grapes, raisins, and walnut halves in a creamy dressing made from mayonnaise, sugar, and red wine vinegar. Served on Boston bibb or romaine lettuce, this salad blends sweet, tart, and crunchy elements with a tangy, slightly sweet dressing for a refreshing and textured salad experience.

Description

The recipe uses one red apple such as Honey Crisp or Red Delicious and a green apple like Golden Delicious, both unpeeled and chopped. Celery slices and halved red seedless grapes add freshness and bite, while golden raisins provide chewy sweetness. Walnut halves contribute a crunchy contrast. The dressing combines mayonnaise, granulated sugar, red wine vinegar, and freshly ground black pepper, delivering a balance of creaminess and acidity.

Once dressed, the salad is chilled until serving and arranged atop crisp lettuce leaves, which add a cool, fresh base. The combination creates a layered texture inviting with sweet, tart, crunchy, and creamy components all present. The dressing can be adjusted for personal taste and substituted to include Greek yogurt or a mix for variation.

Waldorf Salad pairs well as a light lunch or accompaniment to richer mains. It can be prepared in advance and refrigerated, maintaining its crispness and flavors for a couple of days. Additional mix-ins like berries or pecans are optional to customize the dish. Adding grilled chicken turns it into a protein-rich meal.
