Warm Cuban Sandwich Dip

This Warm Cuban Sandwich Dip combines cream cheese, Swiss cheese, diced ham, and cornichons with Dijon and whole grain mustards to create a rich, creamy, and slightly tangy spread. Baked until bubbly and browned on top, the dip offers a smooth, cheesy texture with bites of crunchy pickles and savory ham. It's ideal for serving hot alongside slices of Cuban bread or soft rolls, making it a cozy appetizer or snack option.

Description

The Warm Cuban Sandwich Dip brings together softened cream cheese and shredded Swiss cheese as the creamy base. Diced thick-cut ham and chopped cornichons add savory and tangy bursts inside the mix, while the blend of Dijon and whole grain mustards introduces a mild sharpness that balances the richness. Baking in an oven-safe dish allows the cheese to melt thoroughly, creating a hot, bubbling dip with a lightly browned crust. This preparation highlights the flavors of a Cuban sandwich in a shareable, easy-to-serve form.

The dip’s creamy and slightly tangy profile pairs well with thick slices of Cuban bread or soft rolls, which can be dipped or spread with it. The warm temperature ensures the cheese stays melted and smooth while the toppings provide subtle contrasts in texture and flavor.

For the best results, use deli-sliced ham cut thickly (about 1/2 inch) and diced at home, which ensures substantial ham pieces in the dip. If the top isn't browned evenly after baking, a brief broil can help achieve a desirable golden finish. Serve immediately to enjoy the dip’s full creaminess and warmth.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 8 ounces cream cheese room temperature
  • 8 ounces swiss cheese shredded (about 2 1/2 cups), divided (some reserved to sprinkle on top)
  • 10 cornichon diced (about 1/3 cup, or 3 small pickles
  • 1/2 pound ham cubed, 1/2-inch thick
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon whole grain mustard
  • 1/4 cup crème fraîche (or mayo or sour cream)
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper freshly ground
  • bread sliced, for serving, Cuban bread or soft roll bread

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Figure out your oven-proof baking vessel. I used a round ceramic bowl that was 6-inches around. In a large bowl (or stand-up mixer with the paddle attachment), add the cream cheese, swiss cheese, cornichons or pickles, diced ham, Dijon mustard, whole grain mustard, creme fruit and pepper.
  2. Give it a mix until all of the ingredients are thoroughly mixed. Transfer to your oven-proof dish.
  3. Bake for about 15 to 17 minutes, until warmed throughout and bubbling. It should be nice and evenly brown on top, if not feel free to transfer it to the broiler for about 2 minutes, until nice and browned on top. Serve hot with slices of Cuban bread or soft rolls.

Notes

  • Use thick-cut ham sliced at the deli or slice at home to maintain substantial chunks in the dip.
  • If the dip isn’t browned on top after baking, broil it for 2 minutes to achieve a golden crust.
  • Serve hot with Cuban bread or soft rolls for dipping.
