Watermelon Lemonade
Description
Watermelon Lemonade uses pureed seedless watermelon strained to remove pulp, creating a smooth juice base. This is mixed with freshly squeezed lemon juice and simple syrup made by dissolving sugar in water over gentle heat. Additional water dilutes the concentrated flavors to a balanced sweetness and acidity. Garnishing with watermelon and lemon slices enhances presentation.
The drink offers a crisp, slightly tangy, and fruity flavor profile, making it suitable for serving chilled over ice. It combines the natural sweetness of watermelon with bright citrus notes from fresh lemon juice, resulting in a light, thirst-quenching beverage.
Adjust the number of lemons according to size and tartness to suit taste preferences. Because watermelon pulp settles, stirring before serving is necessary to redistribute flavors and texture. Adding mint to the syrup during preparation is optional for a herbal note, with leaves strained out afterward.
Store prepared watermelon lemonade refrigerated for up to five days and stir before serving again to maintain consistency.
Ingredients
- 6 cups water divided
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 5 cups watermelon cubed, seedless
- 1 cup lemon see note, fresh-squeezed juice
- watermelon optional, sliced, additional, for garnish
- lemon optional, sliced, additional, for garnish
Instructions
- Combine 1 cup (236ml) of water with the granulated sugar in a small saucepan. Cook over medium-low heat, stirring frequently, until sugar is completely dissolved. Remove from heat and set aside.
- Place watermelon in a blender and puree until completely smooth and pureed.
- Pour watermelon through a fine mesh strainer into a large pitcher. Use a spatula to help nudge the juices through. Discard the pulp.
- Add simple syrup, lemon juice and remaining 5 cups (1.18L) of water to the pitcher and stir well. Chill in the refrigerator until cold (stir before serving) or pour over ice to serve immediately. Garnish with additional watermelon, lemon slices, or mint sprigs. Note that the watermelon will settle as the lemonade sits and you should always stir well before pouring.
Notes
- Use fresh-squeezed lemon juice and strain out seeds for best flavor.
- Optionally steep mint leaves in syrup after sugar dissolves for 15 minutes, then strain out before mixing.
- Adjust lemon quantity based on size and taste preferences.
- Store lemonade refrigerated up to 5 days; stir before serving each time.
