Watermelon Mint Lemonade (Chick-Fil-A Copycat)
Description
This recipe begins with a lemon-mint simple syrup made by simmering lemon zest, fresh mint leaves, sugar, and water until the syrup takes a pale yellow color and releases a fragrant aroma. After straining out solids, the syrup provides a sweet base infused with citrus and mint flavors.
Fresh watermelon flesh is puréed and strained through a fine mesh sieve to remove pulp and seeds, producing a smooth juice. The watermelon juice is then combined with freshly squeezed lemon juice, the lemon-mint syrup, and additional cold water to adjust sweetness and tartness to the desired level.
Chilled and served over ice or frozen watermelon cubes, this lemonade delivers balanced sweetness, tropical freshness, and cooling mint. Variations such as swapping limes for lemons or adding tea or sorbet are suggested for alternative flavors or textures. It lends itself well to summer gatherings or casual refreshment.
The use of fresh ingredients and careful straining ensures a clear, flavorful lemonade that captures the essence of watermelon and citrus. Storing the syrup separately and mixing fresh maintains brightness in the final drink.
Ingredients
Lemon Mint Simple Syrup
- lemon zest of 2 lemons
- 1/4 cup mint leaf fresh
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup granulated sugar
Watermelon Mint Lemonade
- 6 cups watermelon fresh
- 1 cup lemon juice
- 1 cup lemon mint simple syrup
- 1 cup water cold
Instructions
- Make the Simple Syrup
- Stir the lemon zest, sugar, mint leaves, and water in a saucepan over medium-high heat.
- Bring to a boil, then turn the temperature to medium/medium low to simmer for about 10-15 minutes, or until the color of the syrup turns yellow from the lemons, the sugar has completely dissolved, and the syrup is fragrant.
- Turn the heat off, and pour the lemon mint syrup through a mesh sieve into a heat-safe container.
- Make the Watermelon Lemonade
- Purée the watermelon flesh in the blender until smooth. Pour it through a fine mesh sieve into a pitcher to remove the pulp.
- Add the lemon syrup, lemon juice, and water to the pitcher and stir until well combined.
- Chill in the fridge covered with plastic wrap or a lid until ready to serve.
- Serve over ice cubes or frozen watermelon cubes.
Notes
- Using homemade lemon-mint simple syrup allows control over sweetness and mint flavor, but store-bought lemonade can be substituted for faster preparation.
- Avoid using the white part near the watermelon rind when juicing to prevent sour or bitter taste.
- If fresh mint is unavailable, a few drops of mint extract can substitute—use sparingly as it is potent.
- Try variations such as lemon sorbet blended with watermelon and syrup for a frosted drink or freezing the lemonade into popsicles for a summer treat.
- The lemonade may be mixed with sweetened iced tea or vodka for different drink options.
