Watermelon Smash
Description
This cocktail begins by muddling fresh watermelon cubes and mint leaves together to release juice and aromatic oils. Vodka adds the alcoholic base, while lime juice and simple syrup contribute acidity and sweetness. The mixture is shaken vigorously with ice to chill and blend the flavors, then strained into an ice-filled glass for serving.
The watermelon provides natural sweetness and a light fruitiness, complemented by the freshness of mint. Lime juice cuts through with brightness, and simple syrup smooths the tartness. The drink is typically garnished with a mint sprig and watermelon slice to highlight its ingredients.
Variations include substituting vodka with other clear spirits like white rum, tequila, or gin. Using crushed or nugget ice enhances the texture and chill. For a frozen version, frozen watermelon is blended with ice and ingredients until smooth. A nonalcoholic version swaps vodka for water or soda.
Watermelon Smash is suited to cocktail hours during warm seasons, offering a lightly sweet and herbaceous alcoholic beverage with a fresh fruit base.
Ingredients
- 1 cup watermelon cut into cubes
- 3 mint leaves
- 2 ounces vodka
- 1 ounce lime juice
- 1 ounce simple syrup
Instructions
- Place the chopped watermelon and mint leaves in a cocktail shaker, and muddle them together really well. If you don't have a muddler, use a wooden spoon or a fork to really mash them together, and get as much juice out of the watermelon as possible.
- Add in the vodka, lime juice, and simple syrup.
- Fill the shaker with ice. Place the lid on top and shake.
- Strain the drink into a glass filled with ice. Top with a sprig of mint and a slice of watermelon. Enjoy!
Notes
- Crushed or nugget ice is preferred for texture; if unavailable, pulse regular ice in a blender to create crushed ice.
- Watermelon pairs well with various liquors; try substituting vodka with white rum, tequila, or gin if desired.
- For a frozen version, freeze watermelon cubes and blend with ice and ingredients until smooth.
- To make a nonalcoholic mocktail, replace vodka with water, seltzer, or club soda.
