Whole Roasted Kabocha Squash with Chipotle Butter
Description
Whole Roasted Kabocha Squash with Chipotle Butter features a whole kabocha squash roasted until the flesh is soft enough to pierce with a knife. This winter squash has a dense, rich texture that becomes tender and creamy when baked. The chipotle butter is prepared by mixing softened unsalted butter with chipotle powder and salt, creating a spicy and smoky condiment that complements the natural sweetness of the squash. Baking the squash whole retains moisture, and slicing out wedges after cooking makes serving straightforward.
The chipotle butter adds a smoky heat that enhances the squash’s flavor without overpowering it. Due to the squash’s natural sweetness and softness, the combination delivers a pleasant balance of creamy texture and mild heat. Serving the wedges hot with a dollop of chipotle butter allows the butter to melt into the squash, boosting flavor and richness.
This recipe suits a simple side dish or vegetarian option for meals where a rich but uncomplicated vegetable is desired. The roasting step requires about an hour, but active preparation time is minimal, and the flavored butter can be made ahead and refrigerated until needed.
Ingredients
- 1 kabocha squash (approximately 3-4 pounds)
chipotle butter
- 1/2 cup butter at room temperature, unsalted
- 1 Tbsp chipotle powder
- pinch salt (omit if you used salted butter)
Instructions
- Set oven to 400°F.
- Set squash on a baking sheet and use a small sharp knife to pierce the top a few times.
