Yogurt Melts
Description
The recipe involves placing small dime-sized circles of yogurt on parchment-lined trays and freezing them for at least two hours to harden. The yogurt chosen can be flavored, such as strawberry beet berry, or plain Greek yogurt mixed with fruit purees for natural flavor and color. The frozen dollops create bite-sized snacks that are soft enough to melt easily, reducing choking risk, which is important for babies.
These bites can be stored in the freezer and brought out in small batches since they thaw quickly at room temperature. Testing a yogurt melt by placing it on the tongue helps gauge its softness and safety for young eaters.
The simplicity of the recipe allows customization by flavor and yogurt choice. Using reusable piping bags or plastic baggies for shaping the melts makes the process straightforward whether using commercial yogurt pouches or homemade yogurt blends.
Leftover yogurt melts keep well in the freezer and maintain their shape until served, providing an easy make-ahead snack option.
Ingredients
- 1 .5 ounce pouch yogurt I used Stonyfield Organic Strawberry Beet Berry, any flavor
Instructions
- Line a baking sheet or large flat plate with parchment paper. Be mindful that you want something that will fit in your freezer.
- Squirt tiny dime-size circles of yogurt onto the parchment paper, making rows. Using a store-bought yogurt pouch makes this really easy, but if you want to use yogurt from a container, simply add the yogurt to a reusable pouch, piping bag or to a plastic baggie with the tip cut off.
- Place the baking sheet or plate with yogurt melts in the freezer and let them freeze at least 2 hours or overnight. They will get harder has they continue to freeze.
- To serve, I recommend bring a few yogurt melts out from the freezer at a time because they melt quickly. If the bites are frozen solid let them sit at room temp for 1-2 minutes to thaw a bit before giving them to baby. You can also test how hard they are by placing one on your tongue to see if it melts easily. This is helpful if you're worried about choking!
- Store leftover yogurt melts in the freezer. Once they're frozen solid you can transfer them to a freezer-safe container for storage, but be aware that if they start to melt at all they will stick together. Alternatively you can keep them on the baking sheet or plate in the freezer for storage. They will keep in the freezer for up to 3 months.
Notes
- Use plain whole milk Greek yogurt mixed with 1-2 tablespoons of baby food puree to sweeten and color homemade yogurt melts.
- Make dime-sized dollops for portion control and easy freezing.
- Test yogurt melts’ softness on your tongue before serving them to babies for safety.
- Store leftover melts in the freezer and bring out only a few at a time to prevent quick melting.
