4-Ingredient Crescent Roll Ground Beef Casserole
Description
The 4-Ingredient Crescent Roll Ground Beef Casserole starts with a pressed crescent roll dough forming a buttery crust in the baking dish. Ground beef is cooked until browned, then combined with chunky salsa, which moistens and flavors the filling without sogginess. The meat mixture is spread over the crust and topped with shredded cheddar cheese that melts and browns during baking, creating a crisp topping around the edges.
The casserole is baked at a moderate temperature until the crust is golden and cooked through. Serving suggestions include garnishing with sliced green onions, fresh parsley, pickled red onions, sour cream, or avocado for added texture and flavor.
Using a crescent dough sheet without perforations helps achieve a uniform crust. If using regular crescent roll dough with perforations, pressing the seams together firmly prevents filling leakage.
Ingredients
- 1 (8 ounce) crescent roll dough I use Pillsbury Crescent Dough Sheets, which don't have perforations, Pillsbury brand, canned
- 1 lb. ground beef
- 1 cup salsa or substitute with barbecue sauce, thick and chunky
- 1 cup cheddar cheese grated, or Mexican cheese blend
- green onion Optional garnish, sliced green onions, chopped fresh parsley, pickled red onions, or other taco toppings
- parsley
- sour cream
- olive
- avocado
- guacamole
- Pickled red onion
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Spray an 11 x 7-inch baking dish with cooking spray. You can also use a 9 x 13-inch dish -- it will just yield a slightly thinner crust and beef layer. Either works well, though! Unroll the crescent roll dough and press into the bottom of the prepared dish to form a crust. Set aside.
- In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium-high heat until it's no longer pink. Drain off excess grease. Stir in 1 cup of salsa, or just enough to moisten and flavor the meat. You don’t want the filling too “wet,” or it might make the crust soggy. I opt for a "thick and chunky" style salsa for this dish. Taste and season with salt and pepper, if desired.
- Spoon the beef mixture over the crescent roll dough. Sprinkle with grated cheese.
- Bake for 20 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown.
- Cut into squares and serve. Garnish with optional toppings.
Notes
- Use crescent dough sheets without perforations for a uniform crust; otherwise, press perforations firmly if using regular dough.
- Choose a thick and chunky salsa to avoid making the filling too watery.
- Optional garnishes like green onions, pickled onions, or sour cream enhance flavor and texture.
