7 Layer Dip

7 Layer Dip is a multi-layered appetizer featuring refried beans, cream cheese mixed with sour cream and taco seasoning, guacamole, salsa, shredded cheddar cheese, black olives or tomatoes, and green onions. Each layer provides distinct textures and flavors, from creamy and smooth to tangy and savory. Chilling the dip before serving allows the layers to meld slightly and enhances the overall creaminess. This dish is commonly served with tortilla chips or crackers for scooping.

Description

The 7 Layer Dip recipe thoughtfully layers ingredients starting with refried beans combined with milk for a smooth base, topped with a seasoned cream cheese and sour cream mixture whipped to a fluffy consistency. Next comes a layer of guacamole, followed by well-drained salsa to prevent excess moisture. The dip is then sprinkled with shredded cheddar cheese, sliced black olives or diced tomatoes, and sliced green onions for color and flavor contrast. Chilling the layered dip for at least an hour helps the layers set and blend slightly without mixing. This appetizer offers a combination of creamy, tangy, and savory elements and is best served accompanied by tortilla chips or crackers for dipping.

Ingredients

Servings
  • cups salsa
  • 16 ounces refried beans 1 can, canned
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 8 ounces cream cheese softened
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • 1 ounce taco seasoning 1 packet, about 2 tablespoons
  • 1 cup guacamole prepared
  • cups cheddar cheese shredded
  • ½ cup black olives or diced tomatoes
  • 4 green onions sliced
  • cilantro for garnish, optional, chopped, fresh

Instructions

  1. Place salsa in a sieve and drain the liquid into a small bowl (this keeps your dip from getting runny).
  2. In a small bowl, combine refried beans and milk (or you can use the liquid from the salsa if you prefer). Mix until smooth and spread in the bottom of a 2 qt baking dish or pan.
  3. In a bowl, mix cream cheese, sour cream and taco seasoning with a hand mixer on medium speed. Dollop the cream cheese mixture over the beans and spread evenly.
  4. Spoon guacamole over cream cheese and gently spread. Add the drained salsa and gently spread.
  5. Top with cheese, olives/tomatoes and green onions.
  6. Chill 1 hour before serving. Serve with tortilla chips or crackers.

Notes

  • This dip can be assembled up to one day ahead to enhance flavors.
  • Additional toppings like cilantro or jalapenos may be added to suit taste preferences.
  • Using a hand mixer to blend the beans and sour cream layers ensures a fluffy, scoopable texture.
  • Store leftovers tightly covered in the refrigerator for up to four days; drain off any accumulated liquid before serving.
