Affogato

Affogato is a simple dessert featuring cold vanilla gelato or ice cream drowned in a shot of hot espresso, optionally amplified by a splash of coffee-friendly liqueur. The contrast between cold creamy ice cream and hot intense coffee creates a balancing, silky dessert experience.

Description

Affogato blends creamy vanilla gelato or ice cream with a strong shot of hot espresso poured over just before eating. The heat of the coffee quickly melts parts of the ice cream, forming a rich mixture of coffee and cream. Adding a splash of liqueur like Frangelico, amaretto, or rum is optional, lending an additional flavor dimension. Traditionally vanilla is used to complement the coffee's bitterness, but other ice cream flavors can be substituted.

The dessert is served immediately in a suitable glass, allowing you to enjoy the blend of hot and cold textures and the aromatic coffee flavor as the ice cream softens. It rarely keeps once started, best enjoyed freshly made. Optional additions such as biscotti, chocolate shavings, or nuts can enhance texture and variety.
