Air Fryer Churros

These Air Fryer Churros are crispy on the outside with a soft, airy interior, made from a smooth dough cooked without frying oil. The dough blends water, milk, butter, sugar, flour, eggs, and vanilla for a rich, tender texture. After cooking, the churros are coated with cinnamon sugar, adding a classic sweet-spicy finish. This method offers a lighter way to enjoy churros with an easy-to-follow preparation.

Description

This recipe produces churros by first boiling a mixture of water, milk, butter, and sugar, then stirring in flour until a dough forms. The dough is cooked briefly on heat to stabilize, then beaten with eggs and vanilla to incorporate air and build structure. The dough is piped into an air fryer basket and cooked until golden and crisp on the outside, maintaining a soft center.

Coated immediately in a cinnamon sugar mix, the churros have a classic sweet flavor with warming spice. The air fryer provides even cooking with little added fat, yielding churros that are crisp without deep frying. The texture balances a crunchy exterior and a moist, fluffy interior.

This recipe suits those looking for a less oily version of churros, with the distinctive cinnamon sugar finish that is traditional. The technique requires some attention to dough consistency and air fryer timing for optimal results.

For best results, monitor cooking times as the air fryer heat can vary and cook subsequent batches faster. Avoid using aerosol cooking sprays on the basket to preserve its coating. Powdered sugar may be used as an alternative coating.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 Tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Cinnamon Sugar Coating

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

This is not a difficult recipe but for the best results read the recipe through and get all the ingredients and equipment ready before you start!

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine water, milk, butter and 1 tablespoon of the sugar. Bring it to a boil over medium heat, stirring as it cooks.
  2. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the flour into the saucepan with a wooden spoon. Stir until the flour is completely mixed in.
  3. Put the saucepan back on the heat and stir it constantly for 2 minutes, until dough comes together in a smooth ball.
  4. Take the dough off the heat and put the dough in a large mixing bowl.
  5. Beat the dough with an electric mixer until fluffy. This will cool the dough so the eggs don’t cook when they are added. Beat the dough for 3-5 minutes.
  6. In a small bowl, whisk together the eggs and vanilla extract.
  7. Slowly add the egg mixture to the cooled dough in the bowl, beating with the mixer after each addition. Scrape down the sides of the mixing bowl and continue until the eggs are mixed in and the dough is smooth.
  8. To pipe the churros use a disposable pastry bag with a #1M open star decorating tip or use a zippered bag with the corner cut off.
  9. Add dough to the pastry bag or put it into the plastic bag. If you are using a plastic bag don't cut the corner off until the dough has been added.
  10. Pipe dough directly into air fryer basket and cut the end with scissors. I usually make 3 inch churros, but you can adjust the length as desired to fit into your air fryer basket. Smaller churro bites are also fun to make.
  11. Once all the churros are in the basket use a mister bottle to spray churros with a little bit of oil.
  12. Cook for 8-10 minutes at 380 F or until golden brown.
  13. While churros are cooking, combine cinnamon sugar mixture in a medium bowl.
  14. Remove churros from air fryer, and add to cinnamon sugar mixture right away. Toss them so they are coated with cinnamon sugar and set them on baking rack to cool.
  15. Serve immediately with chocolate sauce, caramel sauce, or nutella for dipping.

Notes

  • Check churros a few minutes early when cooking additional batches as the air fryer remains hot and cooks faster.
  • Avoid aerosol cooking sprays on the air fryer basket to prevent damage to its coating.
  • Consider tossing churros in powdered sugar for a traditional Spanish finish instead of cinnamon sugar.
