Air Fryer Edamame
Description
Air Fryer Edamame starts by thawing and drying shelled edamame before tossing them with cooking oil or lemon/lime juice and curry powder seasoning. The air fryer crisps the edamame at 375°F, with basket shaking halfway through to ensure even cooking. The result is a crunchy, flavorful edamame snack with hints of curry and a light salt finish.
The crisp, toasted coating contrasts well with the natural soft bite of the edamame interior, making it a satisfying and protein-rich treat. Curry powder and other suggested seasonings like harissa, za’atar, chili powder, or vegan "chicken" broth powder add interesting flavor profiles that can be varied as desired.
These seasoned edamame can be served as a warm snack or appetizer. Leftovers can be stored refrigerated for up to 5 days and reheated briefly in the air fryer to restore crispness. If an air fryer is unavailable, they can be baked in the oven at 375°F, though cooking times will be longer.
Ingredients
- 8 ounces edamame frozen or fresh/ready-to-eat, shelled (2 cups
- 1 tablespoon cooking oil For oil-free option use 2 teaspoons lemon or lime juice, optional
- 2½ teaspoons curry powder See Notes for ideas, or other seasoning
- ¼ teaspoon salt adjust to taste, fine sea salt
Instructions
- If using frozen edamame, quick-thaw it by placing in a bowl and covering with water. Let stand for a few minutes, then drain.
- Place edamame on a lint-free towel and pat dry. Trasfer to a bowl and toss with the oil (or lemon/lime juice). Add the seasonings and salt, and stir well.
- Transfer the edamame to the air fryer basket. No need to preheat the air fryer. Set the air fryer to 375 degrees F (190 C), and cook for about 10 minutes. If the air fryer instructs you to "add food" after a few minutes, shake the basket to toss the edamame. Continue cooking, and shake the basket again during the last few minutes of cooking.
- When the edamame is as golden and crisp as you like, carefully pour onto a paper towel-lined plate or bowl. Add another pinch of salt, if desired. Serve immediately while hot and crisp.
Notes
- Store cooled edamame in a container in the fridge for up to 5 days to keep freshness.
- Reheat leftovers briefly in the air fryer to restore crisp texture.
- If you don't have an air fryer, roast edamame in a 375°F oven, tossing every 10 minutes until crisp (about 25-30 minutes).
- Try different seasonings like harissa, za'atar, chili powder, cumin, or vegan broth powder for varied flavors.
