Air Fryer Frozen Chips

Air Fryer Frozen Chips provide a simple method to crisp frozen fries using an air fryer at 200°C for about 10-15 minutes, shaking midway for even cooking. Most frozen fries come lightly oiled, but additional oil spray can be added if desired. Season with salt, pepper, or preferred spices. This approach yields hot, crispy chips without deep frying, suitable for quick snacking or side dishes.

Description

This recipe guides cooking frozen oven chips or fries directly in an air fryer basket, typically at 200°C (392°F) for 10 minutes, with shaking halfway to promote even crisping. Cooking time can be adjusted by 3-4 minute increments depending on fry thickness and personal crispness preference, with thinner fries cooking faster and crispier. Most frozen chips are pre-oiled, but a light spray of high smoke point oil can be applied if fries feel dry.

The instructions note the importance of avoiding aerosol cooking sprays due to health and safety concerns, suggesting sprayers filled with oils like coconut oil instead. The seasoning is user-configurable with salt, pepper, or other favorite chip spices. Serving the chips immediately is recommended, as reheating may cause sogginess.

The recipe shares general cooking times for various chip cuts, from skinny fries to chunky chips, highlighting the variation in cook time required. Nutritional information varies by brand and should be checked on packaging. This method offers a straightforward way to prepare frozen fries with a good balance of crispiness and convenience.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 300 g frozen potato fries or your favourite brand of frozen chips, McCain brand
  • 1 tsp salt or your preferred choice of chips spice, to season
  • 1 tsp black pepper or your preferred choice of chips spice, to season
  • cooking oil do not use aerosol sprays, see notes, spray, optional

Instructions

  1. Place the frozen oven chips on the air fry basket. Most frozen fries already come oiled.
  2. Air fry at 200° C / 392° F for 10 minutes. Ensure you check and shake the basket halfway through cooking. If not done to your liking, continue air frying for an additional 4 minutes. If you prefer even more crispiness, extend the time in 3-4 minute increments, shaking your basket occasionally. Finally, season with some salt and pepper, or your favorite chips seasoning.
  3. Serve while still hot with your favorite sides and dipping sauce or sauces. Basically, that's how easy it is to make frozen chips using the air fryer!

Notes

  • Most frozen fries come pre-oiled; adding too much extra oil can cause sogginess.
  • Do not use aerosol cooking sprays; use a sprayer bottle filled with high smoke point oil if necessary.
  • Shake the air fryer basket halfway through cooking to promote even crisping.
  • Serve fries immediately after cooking to maintain crispness; reheating can cause sogginess.
  • Adjust cooking time based on chip thickness, air fryer type, and desired crispiness.
