Amaretto Poached Pears Recipe

Amaretto Poached Pears feature whole peeled pears simmered gently in a sweetened amaretto liqueur, infused with brown sugar. The poaching softens the pears while absorbing the almond-flavored spirit. After poaching, the liquor is boiled down into a syrupy sauce to drizzle over the pears. Served with optional whipped cream or mascarpone, this dessert combines tender, fragrant fruit with a rich sauce.

Description

This recipe for Amaretto Poached Pears starts with whole pears peeled and cored from the bottom. They are simmered gently in a mixture of amaretto liqueur and light brown sugar until tender and infused with the liqueur's distinctive almond essence. Turning the pears during cooking ensures even flavor absorption. Once cooked, the pears are removed and the poaching liquid is boiled uncovered to reduce it to a thick syrup.

The finished pears are tender but hold their shape, accented by the warm, sweet, and nutty amaretto sauce. The syrup coats the pears lightly, enhancing their natural sweetness with depth. Serving with whipped cream or mascarpone adds creamy richness that balances the poached fruit.

This elegant dessert suits dinner parties or special occasions, showcasing the contrast of smooth creamy topping with soft, flavorful pears. The preparation highlights simple techniques to elevate pears with alcohol and sugar into a refined treat.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 6 pear
  • 1 ½ cups amaretto
  • 3 tablespoons light brown sugar
  • Whipped Cream to serve, optional or mascarpone

Instructions

  1. Peel the pears and gently remove the core from the bottom with a paring knife or a small spoon.
  2. Bring the Amaretto and brown sugar to a boil in a pot just big enough to fit the pears. Add the pears, lower the heat, cover the pot, and simmer for 15 minutes. Turn pears every few minutes to ensure all sides of the pears absorb some of the Amaretto flavor. Remove pears and set them aside.
  3. Increase the heat to high and boil the amaretto, uncovered, until it is reduced to ½ cup.
  4. To serve, stand a pear in the middle of a plate. Drizzle with reduced Amaretto sauce over the top and add a dollop of whipped cream or mascarpone cheese beside the pear.
