Apple Chips
Description
The Apple Chips recipe involves thinly slicing apples with a mandoline to about 1/16 inch thickness, then evenly coating each slice on both sides with a mixture of cinnamon and powdered sweetener. The slices are laid out on parchment-lined baking sheets and baked at 200°F for approximately two to two and a half hours, with flipping and continued baking to dry them out evenly.
Once baked, the oven is turned off, and the slices remain in the cooling oven for another hour. This prolonged drying ensures the chips become crisp without moisture. The final texture is crunchy and lightly spiced with cinnamon, making a healthy alternative to traditional chips.
Leaving the skin on the apples helps maintain their shape during baking. The recipe suggests using a mandoline for uniform slicing, which is essential for even cooking. If preferred, a dehydrator set to 135°F can be used instead, though it requires much longer drying, about 10 hours.
Apple chips can be stored at room temperature in an airtight container for up to one week, making them a convenient snack or topping.
Ingredients
- 3 apple
- 2 Tablespoon ground cinnamon
- 2 Tablespoon powdered sweetener
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 200°F and line two large baking sheets with parchment paper. Set aside.
- Sift powdered sweetener and cinnamon into a bowl.
- Wash and thinly slice the apples using a mandoline to 1/16”. Remove seeds from the slices. Spread the apple slices onto the baking sheets in a single layer. Using a sifter or sieve, sprinkle each slice with the cinnamon and sweetener mixture on each side.
- Bake for 1 hour, flip the apples over, and bake for another 1-1.5 hours. Turn the oven off and keep the apples inside as the oven cools down for 1 hour. This will help them get crunchy. Allow the apple chips to cool completely before storing. Store apple chips at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 1 week.
Notes
- Use a mandoline to slice apples uniformly about 1/16 inch for even baking.
- Keep the apple skins on to help slices hold their shape while baking.
- Let the chips cool in the turned-off oven for an hour to achieve crispiness.
- A dehydrator can be used at 135°F for about 10 hours as an alternative drying method.
- Store finished apple chips in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week.
