Apple Cranberry Sauce

Apple Cranberry Sauce combines fresh cranberries and peeled chopped apples sweetened with honey and flavored with fresh ginger, cinnamon, orange zest and juice, plus a splash of balsamic vinegar. The sauce cooks until tender and thickened, offering a fruit-forward condiment with balanced sweetness and subtle spice that can be served chilled or at room temperature.

Description

This cranberry sauce integrates tart cranberries with naturally sweet apples to create a harmonious fruit blend. Honey adds gentle sweetness while fresh grated ginger and cinnamon provide warming spice notes. Orange zest and juice contribute freshness and acidity, complemented by balsamic vinegar's slight tang. The ingredients simmer together until the fruit softens and the mixture thickens, thickening further as it cools to a rich sauce ideal for accompanying poultry or holiday meals.

The sauce can be prepared a day or two ahead, allowing flavors to meld and making it convenient for entertaining. It can be served chilled or at room temperature depending on preference. The ginger can be omitted for a milder taste, though this reduces some flavor complexity.

For longer storage, freeze the sauce in an airtight container for up to three months, thawing in the refrigerator before use.

  • orange zest and juice from one
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
