Apple Sangria
Description
This Apple Sangria recipe combines chilled unoaked chardonnay with fresh pressed apple cider and bourbon for warmth. Lemon juice adds brightness, while orange bitters introduce subtle citrus complexity. Thinly sliced apple rings and fresh thyme sprigs steep in the mixture, infusing herbal and fruity aromas as the sangria chills for a couple of hours.
Before serving, hard cider is stirred in to introduce effervescence and enhance the apple flavor profile. Serving over crushed ice and garnishing with additional apple slices and fresh thyme sprigs provides a refreshing presentation and keeps the sangria cool.
The balance of wine and cider with bourbon gives this drink a layered taste that is both crisp and warming, suitable for fall gatherings or when a fruit-forward cocktail is desired. Adjustments to sweetness and strength can be made by varying the cider, bourbon, or bitters proportionally.
Ingredients
- 1 750 mL chardonnay wine unoaked, chilled, bottle
- 2 c. apple cider fresh pressed
- ½ c. bourbon your favorite
- 2 T. lemon juice freshly squeezed
- 1 tsp. orange bitters used Fee Brothers
- 2 apple medium-sized, firm
- 6 thyme plus one sprig for each individual drink, sprigs
- 2 12- oz. hard cider Angry Orchard "Crisp Cider", bottles
Instructions
- In a large pitcher, stir together Chardonnay, fresh pressed apple cider, Bourbon, lemon juice, and orange bitters.
- Slice apples (do not peel) thinly, crosswise, to get apple rings. Discard any seeds and then cut rings in half. Add apple slices and 6 thyme sprigs to pitcher. Place pitcher in refrigerator to chill and let flavors mingle for a couple hours.
- Right before serving, stir in the hard cider. Taste sangria and adjust if desired - adding more apple cider, Bourbon, and/or bitters, to taste. Fill individual glasses 2/3-full with crushed ice and pour sangria over the ice. Add a few apple slices and a fresh sprig of thyme to each glass.
