Applemoes (Dutch Applesauce)
Description
Applemoes is prepared by peeling and chopping apples, sprinkling them with lemon juice to prevent browning, and placing them into a pot with a small amount of water. The apples are simmered gently with a cinnamon stick and sugar added intermittently to develop sweetness and flavor. Cooking continues until the apples are soft enough to be eaten as chunked pieces or lightly mashed for a smoother consistency, depending on preference.
The resulting applesauce has a comforting balance of sweetness from added sugar and brightness from the lemon juice. Cinnamon adds a warm aromatic note. The texture can be adjusted by mashing to create either a chunky or finer sauce, making it suitable as a side dish or a topping for desserts.
Ingredients
- 1 kg apple around 8 apples
- 2 tablespoon sugar
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 60 ml water
- cinnamon stick
