Avocado Toast Egg-in-a-Hole
Description
This recipe uses a whole wheat slice of bread with a hole cut in the middle, typically using a heart-shaped cutter or glass rim. The hole is used to hold a large egg cracked into the pan, cooking it gently on medium-low heat until the egg is set on the bottom and then flipped to cook the other side until the yolk reaches the desired consistency, commonly soft.
Simultaneously, the avocado is mashed with salt and freshly ground black pepper to enhance its creamy texture and mild flavor. Once the egg-in-a-hole is cooked, the toast is topped with the seasoned mashed avocado and can be finished with an optional splash of hot sauce for heat.
The result is a dish offering toasted bread’s crisp edges, a tender egg center, and smooth avocado topping. The balance of textures and the mild savory notes make it a straightforward yet satisfying dish ideal for breakfast or a light meal.
