Baked Gnocchi (with Sausage and Kale)

Baked Gnocchi with Sausage and Kale blends soft potato dumplings, savory Italian sausage, and tender kale in a creamy Parmesan sauce. The gnocchi are lightly browned before combining with sautéed sausage and kale, then enveloped in a garlic and shallot-infused cream sauce thickened gently in the oven. This dish balances rich, hearty flavors with subtle bitterness from the kale and a touch of heat if red pepper flakes are added. It's a filling main that can warm a dinner table, offering a textured contrast between tender gnocchi and slightly crisped sausage.

Description

Baked Gnocchi (with Sausage and Kale) starts by browning mild Italian sausage and sautéing Tuscan kale, which provides a robust, earthy base. The gnocchi are separately browned to develop a slight crust, adding texture that contrasts with their usual softness. Shallots and sliced garlic gently simmer in heavy cream until reduced to a thick sauce that is enriched with freshly grated Parmesan cheese. The combination is then baked until the sauce further thickens and melds the components. The dish’s layers include the savory meat with kale’s bite, creamy sauce, and browned gnocchi, finishing with an optional sprinkle of crushed red pepper flakes for gentle heat. This preparation brings together different textures and a subtle blend of flavors through stovetop cooking and baking, resulting in a hearty, satisfying entrée suitable for a sit-down meal or casual dinner.
