BBQ Sauce

This BBQ sauce is a balanced blend of tomato sauce, apple cider vinegar, blackstrap molasses, tomato paste, and seasonings including tamari, mustard powder, smoked paprika, and garlic. The sauce is simmered until slightly reduced to integrate flavors, resulting in a tangy, mildly sweet, and smoky condiment. Optional cayenne or hot sauce adds a touch of heat to taste.

Description

The BBQ Sauce combines canned tomato products with vinegar and molasses for a foundation that provides sweetness and acidity. Tamari soy sauce adds umami depth, while mustard powder, smoked paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder contribute layers of spice and smokiness. Black pepper and kosher salt season the sauce, and optional cayenne adds controlled heat. The sauce is brought to a boil briefly, then simmered over low heat to develop a thicker texture and meld the ingredients.

The resulting BBQ sauce is versatile and can be used as a glaze, marinade, or dipping sauce with grilled meats and vegetables. Its balance of sweet, tangy, salty, and smoky flavors allows it to complement a variety of dishes.

Allowing the sauce to cool before using or storing helps flavors settle. Typical serving size is about two tablespoons per person when used as a condiment.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 (15-ounce) can tomato sauce
  • cup apple cider vinegar
  • cup blackstrap molasses
  • ¼ cup tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon tamari soy sauce or coconut aminos
  • 2 teaspoons mustard powder
  • 2 teaspoons smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper freshly ground
  • cayenne pepper optional, ¼ teaspoon or a few dashes of hot sauce

Instructions

  1. Mix and cook the sauce. In a medium saucepan, add all of the ingredients and whisk together. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce to a simmer over low heat (note: if your stove temperature is too high, it will splatter). Let it simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally until slightly reduced.
  2. Let it cool. Turn off the heat and allow to cool before serving or storing.

Notes

  • Two tablespoons is a standard serving size for this sauce as a condiment or glaze.
