Bechamel Sauce
Description
To prepare Bechamel Sauce, unsalted butter is melted in a saucepan and combined with all-purpose flour to form a roux, which is cooked for a few minutes to remove the raw flour taste. Milk is then gradually whisked in along with nutmeg and salt, creating a homogeneous sauce that thickens as it gently cooks over several minutes. The nutmeg adds a subtle warmth characteristic of classic white sauce.
The texture is creamy and smooth without lumps, making it a versatile component for layering flavors or as a base for further sauces like cheese sauce. Proper whisking and cooking prevent clumping and ensure even thickness.
Bechamel can be stored in airtight containers in the refrigerator and used within several days. Covering the sauce surface with plastic wrap in contact prevents skin formation and oxidation.
Ingredients
- 3 tablespoon butter unsalted
- 3 tablespoon all-purpose flour all purpose
- 2 cups milk
- ⅛ teaspoon nutmeg
- ¼ teaspoon salt or to taste
Instructions
- Whisk ingredients: In a saucepan melt the butter and add the flour. With a whisk, whisk in the flour. Keep whisking for about 2 to 3 minutes.
- Add the rest of ingredients: Add the milk, nutmeg and salt and whisk everything together. Cook for another 5 minutes and whisk as necessary.
Notes
- Store Bechamel in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 4-5 days.
- Press plastic wrap directly on the surface of the sauce before refrigerating to prevent skin formation and oxidation.
