Blackberry El Diablo
Description
The Blackberry El Diablo cocktail is built around a syrup made by mixing fresh blackberries with granulated sugar and allowing the fruit to release its juices over time. This syrup adds natural blackberry sweetness and depth. The cocktail combines this syrup with reposado tequila, lime juice, and triple sec in a shaker with ice to blend bright citrus and smooth agave notes. Topped with ginger beer, the drink gains a spicy effervescence that complements the fruity base.
The cocktail is strained and served over fresh ice, garnished with fresh blackberries for visual appeal and added aroma. The combination of sweet, tart, and spicy flavors makes this drink suitable for those who enjoy fruit-forward but balanced cocktails.
Adjustments to sweetness and flavor intensity can be made by substituting triple sec with blackberry liqueur. The syrup yields more than needed for a single drink and can be stored refrigerated for several days. Freezing blackberries for garnish provides a frosty look without dilution.
Ingredients
Blackberry Syrup
- 1/2 pint blackberry
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
Cocktail
- 1-1/2 ounces reposado tequila (3 tablespoons), such as Espolon
- 1/2 ounce lime juice 1 tablespoon, fresh
- 1/2 ounce triple sec (1 tablespoon)*
- 1 ounce blackberry syrup (2 tablespoons)
- 2-3 ounces ginger beer , such as Fever Tree
Instructions
Make the Syrup
- Rinse berries and leave damp. Toss in a bowl with sugar. Let sit for 30-45 minutes, stirring every 15 minutes.
- Strain mixture through a fine mesh sieve, pressing on berries with the back of a spoon to fully release juices. You should have about 1/2 cup blackberry syrup.**
Make the Cocktail
- Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and add tequila, lime juice, triple sec, and blackberry syrup. Cover and shake.
- Strain into a glass filled with fresh ice. Top with ginger beer. Garnish with fresh blackberries.
Notes
- For a sweeter cocktail with stronger blackberry flavor, substitute the triple sec with blackberry liqueur.
- The homemade blackberry syrup yields about enough for four cocktails; store any unused syrup covered in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.
- To enhance presentation, freeze blackberries for a couple of hours before using as garnish to create a frosty effect.
