Broiled Scallops
Description
Broiled Scallops combines one pound of sea scallops with a simple sauce made from melted unsalted butter, freshly squeezed lemon juice, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. The scallops are arranged on a foil-lined pan and broiled twice—first for six minutes with half the sauce, then for another one to four minutes after adding the remaining sauce, until the tops are nicely browned and the scallops are cooked through.
This cooking method imparts a delicate buttery flavor and a slight citrus brightness from the lemon, while the garlic powder adds a subtle savory depth. The scallops develop a lightly crisped surface and remain tender inside.
Broiled scallops are best eaten immediately and can be garnished with freshly minced parsley and served with lemon wedges to enhance their flavor. They fit well as a starter or as part of a light meal.
Leftovers should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator and consumed within 24 hours as scallops do not freeze well. To reheat, broil the scallops briefly until warmed, keeping an eye to avoid overcooking. Using fresh or well-thawed scallops and drying them thoroughly before broiling are key to good texture.
Ingredients
- 6 tablespoons unsalted butter melted
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice freshly squeezed
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper ground
- 1 pound sea scallops fresh or frozen then thawed and dried very well
- parsley for serving, freshly minced parsley, lemon wedges
- lemon for serving, freshly minced parsley, lemon wedges
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to broil and place your oven rack in the middle.
- Stir the melted butter, lemon juice, garlic powder, salt and pepper together in a medium bowl.
- Place a sheet of tin foil on a medium sheet pan then arrange the scallops on the sheet pan and drizzle half of the sauce on top.
- Broil for 6 minutes then remove the pan from the oven and drizzle the remaining sauce on top.
- Broil for another 1 to 4 minutes or until the tops are golden brown and the scallops are cooked through.
- Serve with freshly minced parsley and lemon wedges, if desired.
Notes
- Serve scallops immediately after cooking for best texture and flavor.
- Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours; avoid freezing as scallops freeze poorly.
- To reheat, place scallops under the broiler for 30 to 60 seconds until warmed; microwaving is possible but may toughen the scallops.
