Brown Sugar Candied Yams
Description
This Brown Sugar Candied Yams recipe starts by boiling peeled sweet potato chunks to ensure they are partially tender without disintegrating. Meanwhile, a sauce is made by boiling down orange juice, brown sugar, butter, and a warming blend of ginger, cinnamon, and nutmeg to create a thick syrup. The sweet potatoes are then combined with this syrup in a buttered casserole dish and baked until the yams absorb the flavors and become tender throughout. Orange zest and fresh rosemary finish the dish with aromatic brightness and subtle herbal undertones.
The flavor profile balances the natural sweetness of the yams with citrus notes and warm spices, while the baking process concentrates the syrup to form a glossy, slightly sticky glaze. This texture contrast between tender yams and caramelized coating makes it a rich yet approachable vegetable side.
Serve these candied yams warm alongside roasted meats, particularly during holiday dinners or Sunday family meals. The herbal note from rosemary adds depth and works well with the orange and spice elements, elevating the usual sweet potato dish.
Ingredients
- 2.5 - 3 pounds sweet potato peeled and cut into 2-inch chunks

- Add sweet potatoes to a large, lightly buttered casserole dish, add the sauce, and toss gently to combine.
- Bake until the sauce reduces to a syrup and the potatoes are tender, about 10-15 minutes. Serve hot.
