Cabbage Stir Fry

The Cabbage Stir Fry offers a crisp-tender vegetable dish combining sliced yellow onion, green cabbage, garlic, ginger, cumin, and liquid aminos, finished with grated carrot and chopped green onion. Quick cooking keeps the cabbage's texture lively while developing golden edges that add flavor and depth.

Description

This stir fry starts by sautéing sliced onion in avocado oil until translucent, then adding a generous amount of green cabbage that softens under a cover. After gently cooking down, garlic, fresh grated ginger, cumin, and liquid aminos are stirred in to build savory, aromatic layers. Grated carrot and chopped green onions added near the end add sweetness and freshness, balancing the other flavors.

The dish’s texture contrasts tender wilted cabbage with slightly crisp edges and fresh crunchy garnishes. Its mildly spiced, umami-rich taste makes it suitable as a side for grilled or roasted proteins or as a light main dish.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 3 Tbsp avocado oil
  • 1/2 yellow onion sliced, medium-sized
  • 1 green cabbage sliced, head
  • 4 garlic minced, large cloves
  • 1 Tbsp ginger peeled and grated, fresh
  • 1/2 tsp cumin ground
  • 3 Tbsp liquid aminos or coconut aminos, to taste
  • 2 carrot grated, large
  • 3 green onion chopped, stalks

Instructions

  1. Add the avocado oil to a large skillet with a deep lip and heat over medium-high. Add the onion and sauté, stirring occasionally, until onion has softened and begins to turn translucent. Stir in the chopped cabbage to the skillet - this will likely overflow the skillet at first. Stir as best you can, then cover. Cook until cabbage has wilted and begins cooking down, stirring occasionally, about 3 to 5 minutes.
  2. Remove the cover and add the remaining ingredients, and stir well. Continue cooking until cabbage begins turning golden-brown around the edges and begins sticking to the skillet, about 5 to 8 minutes. Serve alongside your favorite entrée and enjoy.
