Chinese 5 spice recipe

The Chinese 5 Spice recipe combines Sichuan peppercorns, star anise, fennel seeds, cinnamon, and cloves into a balanced powder. Ground into a fine mixture, it offers a complex blend of numbing, warm, sweet, and aromatic notes used to season many dishes in Chinese cuisine.

Description

This Chinese 5 Spice recipe is made by breaking cinnamon sticks and star anise into smaller pieces and grinding them to a powder. These ground spices are combined with whole fennel seeds, cloves, and Sichuan peppercorns, then ground together finely. The resulting blend marries the floral, sweet warmth of cinnamon and star anise with the licorice-like aroma of fennel, the citrusy pungency of Sichuan peppercorns, and the intense aroma of cloves. This five-spice powder is versatile for enhancing savory dishes and marinades. It's important to store it in an airtight container to preserve its vibrant aroma and potent flavor. Large particles sifted out during grinding can be repurposed for stewing recipes to impart gentle spice without overpowering.

Ingredients

  • 20 g Sichuan peppercorn
  • 20 g star anise
  • 10 g fennel seeds
  • 10 g cinnamon or cinnamon powder
  • 8 g cloves

Instructions

  1. Break cinnamon and star anise. And then put the two ingredients in your grinder to ground them to powder.
  2. Mix with other ingredients and continue grind until all the ingredients are well grounded.
  3. Filter large particles out; and keep the filtered ground powder mixture in airtighter container until use.

Notes

  • Use the five-spice powder sparingly, as it has a strong and distinctive flavor.
  • Do not discard the coarser spice particles; they can be used separately in slow-cooked stews to infuse flavor.
