Cornbread for Stuffing

Cornbread for Stuffing combines yellow cornmeal and flour with buttermilk and melted butter to create a golden-brown, tender bread. This recipe produces a moist and slightly sweet cornbread with a fine crumb that serves as an excellent base for classic stuffing recipes, providing structure and subtle corn flavor. Baking in a 9x13-inch dish ensures even cooking and a uniform crust, making it practical for large portions.

Description

Cornbread for Stuffing balances cornmeal and all-purpose flour with standard leaveners like baking powder and baking soda to create a bread with a light texture and moisture contributed by buttermilk and eggs. The addition of a modest amount of sugar adds a subtle hint of sweetness that complements savory stuffing. Brushing melted butter inside the baking dish enhances the crust's richness and prevents sticking. Baking at 375 degrees for 30 to 35 minutes results in a firm but tender interior and a golden exterior suitable for cutting into cubes or crumbling.

This basic cornbread is versatile and pairs well with stuffing recipes that call for a slightly sweet, hearty bread base. It can be made ahead and cubed for drying if needed in advance.
