Crockpot French Toast

Crockpot French Toast uses cubed French bread soaked in an egg, milk, sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla mixture, then slow-cooked with a crumbly topping of flour, brown sugar, butter, cinnamon, and salt. The result is a warm, soft, custardy breakfast perfect for feeding a crowd with minimal active preparation.

Description

This recipe begins by whisking eggs with milk, sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla, then mixing in chunks of French bread. Allowing the bread to soak for up to 12 hours enhances the custard-like texture. It cooks slowly in a sprayed crockpot, producing a moist and tender interior.

The topping made of flour, brown sugar, butter, cinnamon, and salt adds a crumbly and mildly sweet finish, which browns slightly during cooking. The slow cooker method frees you from stove or oven monitoring, making the dish convenient for busy mornings or gatherings.

Serve warm with syrup, powdered sugar, or fresh fruit to complement the soft, spiced bread pudding texture. The slow cooking on low or high allows some flexibility in timing without compromising the dish’s quality.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 6 large egg
  • 2 cups milk whole
  • 1/4 /4 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 lb French bread about 8 cups, or sourdough, cut into 1-inch cubes

TOPPING:

  • 1/4 /4 cup flour
  • 1/4 /4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 /4 cup butter softened
  • 1/2 /2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • salt pinch

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk the eggs, milk, sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla. Add the bread cubes and stir together well. Refrigerate the mixture for 1-12 hours. I've also cooked it right away but letting the mixture soak in helps.
  2. Spray a 6-8 quart crockpot with cooking spray. Pour bread mixture into slow cooker.
  3. For the topping: Mix together the flour, brown sugar, butter, cinnamon, and salt using a pastry cutter or your hands until the texture of wet sand. Crumble mixture over bread in the crockpot.
  4. Cook on low for 4 hours or on high for 2 hours. Serve warm with syrup, powdered sugar, or fruit.
