Dairy-Free Mashed Potatoes Without Milk

These Dairy-Free Mashed Potatoes use Yukon Gold potatoes combined with dairy-free butter and cream cheese to create a creamy, fluffy texture without milk. The seasoning with salt and the cooking method produce a smooth mash that is a suitable alternative for those avoiding dairy.

Description

This recipe prepares mashed potatoes by boiling quartered Yukon Gold potatoes with salt until tender. After draining, the potatoes are mashed thoroughly, then blended with dairy-free butter and dairy-free cream cheese gently warmed together for easier incorporation. The resulting mashed potatoes have a rich, creamy texture despite being dairy-free, retaining the natural flavor of the potatoes enhanced with garlic from the dairy-free cream cheese if present. The preparation method emphasizes careful cooking until fork tender and gentle mixing to keep the mash fluffy.

Seasoning is adjusted with salt to taste before serving, making this suitable as a side dish in various meals where traditional mashed potatoes might be served.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 4 pounds Yukon Gold potato quartered
  • 2 teaspoons salt plus more to taste
  • 4 tablespoons dairy-free butter
  • 3/4 cup dairy-free cream cheese

Instructions

  1. Place the potatoes in a large pot and cover with cold water. Stir in the salt.
  2. Bring to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat slightly and cook until the potatoes can easily be pierced with a fork, about 15 to 20 mins.
  3. Once cooked, drain and mash the potatoes well with a potato masher or ricer.
  4. Melt the butter and cream cheese in a small pan on medium heat (the cream cheese won't fully melt).
  5. Once melted, stir the butter and cream cheese into the potatoes until smooth and fluffy.
  6. Season to taste with salt and serve.
