Dulce De Leche "Sweet Milk" Recipe

Dulce De Leche, or "Sweet Milk," is a thick caramel sauce made by slowly cooking evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, corn syrup, and optional cinnamon sticks until it thickens and turns golden brown. This homemade caramel is smooth and rich with subtle cinnamon fragrance and vanilla, ideal for desserts or as a sweet spread.

Description

This Dulce De Leche recipe uses evaporated milk and sweetened condensed milk combined with corn syrup to achieve a creamy caramel with a deep flavor. The mixture is gently heated for 45 to 60 minutes on the stovetop with constant stirring to prevent burning and to allow the mixture to thicken and develop a golden color. Cinnamon sticks can be added during cooking for a warm spice note, then removed before stirring in vanilla.

Alternatively, the mixture can be cooked in a microwave-safe bowl in short intervals, stirring often, until thick and golden. The resulting dulce de leche has a rich, smooth consistency suitable for topping cakes, ice cream, or as a sweet dip.

The recipe notes that this sauce can be stored refrigerated for up to one month, providing a versatile, homemade caramel option that avoids preservatives.

  • 1 can 14 ounce sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 Tablespoon corn syrup

  3. The mixture will slowly begin to thicken and darken in color. Keep stirring.
  4. Cook and stir until the mixture is making big slow bubbles and is very thick. The mixture will have been simmering for 45-60 minutes.
  5. Remove from heat and let cool for 5 minutes. Remove cinnamon sticks, and stir in the vanilla.

MICROWAVE INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Put all ingredients (except for the vanilla) in a a large deep heat proof bowl. Heat and stir ingredients in 40 second intervals. Watch closely, as the mixture gets hotter, begin string every 30 seconds. You don't want your ingredients to spill out of the bowl. Repeat for about 25 times or until the caramel sauce is golden and thick.

Notes
