Easy Calzones

Easy Calzones are handheld turnovers made from pizza dough filled with tomato sauce, pepperoni, Italian sausage, olives, red onions, and mozzarella cheese. Baked until golden with a crunchy exterior and melted fillings, they offer a convenient, delicious meal or snack with balanced savory components and a crisp crust.

Description

This recipe prepares calzones by rolling out pizza dough into circles topped with classic pizza ingredients like pepperoni, cooked Italian sausage, sliced black olives, red onions, and shredded mozzarella cheese. A layer of pizza sauce creates a flavorful base. Folding the dough over the filling and crimping the edges seals in the ingredients and steams them during baking.

Two vents cut into the tops let steam escape, preventing sogginess. Brushing the exterior with olive oil before and partway through baking promotes a golden, crisp crust. Baked at a high temperature, calzones develop a slightly chewy interior from the dough and warm melted cheese intermixed with savory meats and vegetables.

This dish makes a straightforward pizza alternative that’s portable and customizable. Use a pizza stone or baking sheet, lightly greased to prevent sticking.
