Easy Char Siu with Hoisin Sauce
Description
Easy Char Siu with Hoisin Sauce combines pork butt with a marinade of hoisin sauce, light soy sauce, oyster sauce, Chinese cooking wine, honey, Chinese five-spice powder, sliced garlic, and ginger. The pork is first pierced to help absorb the seasoning and then marinated for one to two days in the refrigerator. Before roasting, a honey and Char Siu sauce glaze is brushed onto the strips to encourage caramelization. The pork is grilled and baked at 200°C, with repeated brushing and turning to achieve a glossy and slightly hardened surface. The result is tender meat with a balanced sweet and savory crust, complementing the underlying marinade flavors.
This dish can be served with steamed rice or noodles, making a flavorful main with a tender bite and a sticky, savory finish from the honey glaze. The marinade's depth and the slow absorption create complexity in taste and texture.
The recipe notes clarify that the preparation time does not include the refrigeration period for marinating, which is essential for flavor development. Using a pre-made Char Siu sauce for brushing adds authenticity and extra flavor layering.
