Easy Glazed Ham Recipe
Description
This recipe directs placing the flat flesh side of a spiralized ham in a roasting pan and coating the top with a quarter cup of glaze before baking covered at 325°F for 90 minutes. Then the ham is uncovered, brushed with more glaze, and baked for an additional 30 to 40 minutes at 400°F until lightly browned. After cooking, the ham rests for 20 to 30 minutes, then is basted once more with the glaze and pan juices before serving.
The slow initial bake ensures the ham heats evenly without drying, while the higher temperature finishes the glaze with a shiny, sticky coating. The glaze's sweetness balances the smoky saltiness of the cured ham.
The ham is ideal as a main dish for holiday meals or special occasions. It pairs well with traditional sides and can be kept warm covered for up to an hour before serving. If using a non-spiralized ham, a checkered pattern cut into the ham can help the glaze penetrate flavors. The ham can be refrigerated for up to five days or frozen for up to three months. Reheating involves adding glaze and chicken stock to the pan and baking covered to retain moisture.
Ingredients
- 6-8 pound ham spiralized
- 1 cup ham glaze
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 325°.
- Place the ham flat flesh side down in a 13x9 casserole dish or large roasting pan.
- If the ham is spiralized, generously spoon on or brush on a ¼ cup of glaze all around the top of the ham. See chef notes above if it is not spiralized.
- Tent the ham and bake at 325° for 90 minutes for a 6–8-pound ham.
- Uncover the ham, spoon on or brush on an additional ¼ cup of glaze all around the top of the ham and bake at 400° for 30-40 minutes or until lightly browned on top.
- Cover the ham and rest for 20-30 minutes before basting one more time using the glaze and juices in the bottom of the pan before serving.
Notes
- Serve the ham soon after resting for best flavor and texture; it can be kept warm covered at 225°F for up to 1 hour.
- Store cooled ham covered in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or freeze wrapped for up to 3 months.
- Reheat in a pan with glaze and chicken stock covered at 350°F until warmed through.
- Most commercial hams are pre-cooked; this recipe reheats and glazes the ham rather than cooking raw meat.
- If not using spiral-cut ham, score a 1-inch checkered pattern on the surface (except flesh side) to help glaze absorption.
- For a smokier flavor, the ham can be smoked at 275°F until reaching 140°F internal temperature.
