Easy Italian Pie Crust Recipe

This Easy Italian Pie Crust recipe combines all-purpose flour, sugar, baking powder, eggs, and butter to create a versatile dough suitable for sweet or savory pies. The dough is mixed just until combined, then chilled to develop structure. It’s a tender crust with a subtle sweetness that pairs well with various fillings, and can be enhanced with zest or spices for flavor variations.

Description

The crust is made by combining flour, sugar, and baking powder with eggs and softened butter. Mixing is minimal to avoid overworking the dough, which helps keep it tender after baking. Once formed, the dough is refrigerated for 30 to 60 minutes to rest. This resting period allows the gluten to relax and the butter to firm up, which aids in handling and creates a flakier texture after baking.

This italian-style crust can serve as the base for numerous pies or tarts. Adding citrus zest, vanilla bean seeds, or warm spices like cinnamon are traditional additions to customize its flavor. The dough can be prepared ahead and kept refrigerated or frozen for up to three months, making it convenient for advance baking.

Thaw frozen dough in the refrigerator before rolling out, and ensure it’s wrapped tightly to prevent drying. This crust works well whether you’re baking fruit pies, savory quiches, or specialty tarts.
