Easy Puff Pastry Tiramisu
Description
This tiramisu variation begins by baking puff pastry sheets until golden and crisp, serving as structural layers in place of traditional sponge. The mascarpone cream filling is made by whipping mascarpone cheese with heavy cream and powdered sugar until thick and smooth. Lady fingers are dipped quickly in strong coffee to infuse flavor without becoming soggy.
The dessert is assembled by layering a puff pastry sheet, a portion of mascarpone cream, coffee-soaked lady fingers, more mascarpone cream, then topped with the remaining puff pastry square and cream. The top is sprinkled with unsweetened cocoa powder to finish. Chilling the assembled dessert allows the flavors to meld and the cream to firm properly.
The crispiness of the puff pastry contrasts with the soft cream and tender lady fingers, creating a distinctive texture combination. Variations can include adding a splash of alcohol to the cream or using different toppings like chocolate chips or grated chocolate. This recipe requires refrigeration and is best served cold.
The dessert should be kept refrigerated in an airtight container or wrapped well, maintaining quality for 2-3 days.
Ingredients
- 1 puff pastry roll
- 2-3 tablespoons powdered sugar
- 10-15 lady fingers (depending on the size of your puff pastry)
- ½ cup coffee strong
TIRAMISU FILLING
- 1¾ cups mascarpone (remove 30 minutes before from the refrigerator)
- 1¾ cups cream whole, whipping or heavy, at least 30% fat content
- 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
- 2-3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder for sprinkling
Instructions
- Pre-heat oven to 375F (190C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Roll out the puff pastry and lightly roll it to even it out. Then cut the sheet in two equal parts, place on the prepared cookie sheet and with a fork prick the dough very well. Brush the dough with milk and sprinkle with the icing sugar. Bake for approximately 15 minutes or until golden. Remove from the oven and let cool completely. (if pastry is very puffy lightly flatten with a clean towel)
- While the puff pastry is cooling, in a large bowl beat together until very thick the mascarpone, cream and sugar.
PUTTING IT TOGETHER
- On a large square serving plate or board place one puff pastry square, add one third of the cream, top with a layer of coffee dipped Lady Fingers (place the coffee in a large bowl and dip the lady fingers one at a time, do not soak the cookies).
- Top with another third of the cream, then place the remaining puff pastry square on top and remaining cream. Refrigerate for at least 2-3 hours or even over night. Sprinkle with the cocoa before serving. Enjoy!
Notes
- The filling can be made with an egg by beating one room temperature egg with 2 tablespoons sugar, then blending with mascarpone and cream for a thicker consistency.
- If cocoa powder is not desired, substitute the topping with chocolate chips or grated chocolate, or leave plain.
- Optional flavor additions include a tablespoon or two of marsala wine, brandy, dark rum, coffee liqueur, or vanilla added to the mascarpone cream.
- Store the dessert well covered in the refrigerator to keep fresh for 2-3 days.
