Easy Rainbow Donuts
Report
These rainbow donuts are one of the easiest rainbow foods you can make! Colorful donuts with vanilla frosting get a rainbow upgrade that makes them so much more fun than regular donuts!

Ingredients
For the donuts
- 2 TBS unsalted butter melted
- 2 Tbs vegetable oil
- ⅓ cup granulated sugar
- ⅓ cup light brown sugar packed
- 2 large eggs room temperature
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp baking soda
- ¼ tsp salt
- ¼ tsp nutmeg
- ¾ cup buttermilk
- Gel food coloring red, blue, green, purple, orange, and yellow
- Rainbow sprinkles (optional)
Donut Glaze
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1-2 TBS water
Instructions
For the donuts
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Spray a donut pan (12-14 donuts total) with non-stick cooking spray and set aside.
- Combine oil, granulated sugar, brown sugar, and melted butter in a bowl. Whisk until well combined.
- Add eggs and vanilla and whisk until smooth.
- Mix flour, baking powder, salt, baking soda, and nutmeg in a separate bowl and set aside.
- Add 1/2 the flour mixture to the butter mixture and stir just until the flour spots are gone - do not over mix.
- Add the buttermilk and stir until combined.
- Add the remaining half of the flour mixture and again stir just until there are no dry spots but do not over mix.
- Spilt batter evenly among the number of bowls you want different colors. Add food coloring to the bowls and mix until you achieve the color you want.
- Pipe one color of the donut batter into a donut spot in the donut pan, filling just that section about 3/4 of the way full with the batter. Don’t fill them completely or the batter will overflow and you’ll lose the hole in the donut.
- Repeat with all of the other donut holes in the pan. Then repeat with all of the other colors of donut batter so you have six colors in each donut spot.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes or until a toothpick comes out cleanly.
- Allow to cool in the pan for five minutes then remove to a wire rack to cool completely.
Donut Glaze
- Mix water and powdered sugar together and beat together until smooth.
- Once donuts are cooled, dip gently into the icing and sit on piece of parchment paper to dry. Top with colored sprinkles while icing is still wet.
- Enjoy!

Notes
- Try out different toppings! These would be delicious with Fruity Pebbles, drizzled with chocolate, or really topped with anything!
- Store any leftovers sealed in an airtight container for up to two days (but they are better fresh).
- Make your icing glaze thicker than you thick it needs to be so that it doesn’t just run right off the donuts. I always err on the side of thicker is better for these.
- Freeze the donuts before glazing them in a freezer safe airtight container. They can be frozen for up to three months and just brought to room temperature to enjoy when you’re ready.
