Easy Tzatziki Sauce
Description
Easy Tzatziki Sauce uses grated and drained cucumber mixed into Greek yogurt blended with lemon juice, minced garlic, fresh parsley, optional mint, garlic powder, and dill. Salting the cucumber before combining helps draw out liquid, which is then squeezed out with paper towels to prevent a watery dip. The combination creates a creamy, textured sauce with herbaceous and tangy notes harmonious with the garlic and lemon.
The sauce is chilled before serving to meld flavors and deliver a cool finish. Texture is pleasantly creamy with small cucumber shreds adding freshness. The herbs provide an aromatic lift and subtle complexity.
This tzatziki pairs well as a topping for gyros, a dip for pita or vegetables, or a sauce alongside grilled meats or fish. Adjusting herbs and spices allows customization to personal taste.
Herbs are flexible based on availability; adding extra garlic, lemon zest, or spices can compensate if herbs are limited. Garnishes like fresh mint, parsley, olive oil drizzle, or paprika complement the presentation. The sauce is best served fresh but flavors develop after a day in the refrigerator.
Ingredients
- ½ English cucumber
- 2 cups Greek yogurt I typically use Fage 2%, thick
- 2 TBSP lemon juice fresh
- 1 clove garlic smashed and minced
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 TBSP parsley fresh chopped
- ½ TBSP mint optional, fresh, chopped
- ¼ tsp garlic powder
- ⅛ tsp dill fresh works great too, dried
- salt to taste
- black pepper to taste
Instructions
- Place a box grater on a cutting board and grate half an English cucumber into little shreds. If using a conventional cucumber, peel before grating.
- Chop into small pieces with a chefs knife and sprinkle with sea salt to draw out the water from the cucumber.
- While cucumber sits, combine yogurt with lemon juice, minced garlic, salt, parsley, mint (optional but tasty!) and season with garlic powder and dried dill.
- Now that the cucumbers have had a few minutes to sit, Wring out the liquid by placing your cucumber in the center of a small stack of 3 paper towels, Squeeze/twist to get the water our over your sink and then add the cucumber to your dip. Stir and season with any additional salt and pepper you desire. Feel free to season with any extra dill or garlic powder as well - let your taste buds be your guide!
- Pop in the fridge to chill.
- Serve with all your favorite dippers, sandwiches, or proteins. This fresh tzatziki sauce is great on everything!
Notes
- Use fresh herbs such as parsley and mint to enhance the flavor, but adjust according to what's available.
- Salt the grated cucumber and squeeze out excess liquid thoroughly to avoid a watery sauce.
- Additional garlic, lemon zest, or dried spices can boost flavor if herbs are limited.
- Garnish with herbs, olive oil, or paprika for a decorative touch before serving.
- Chill the sauce to allow flavors to meld; the taste intensifies after a day refrigerated.
