French Toast Bake Casserole
Description
This French Toast Bake begins by cubing a loaf of sourdough bread or French baguette and arranging it in a greased pan. A custard mixture of eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated and brown sugars, vanilla extract, orange zest, cinnamon, and nutmeg is poured evenly over the bread. The pan is covered and refrigerated overnight to allow the bread to absorb the custard fully.
Separately, a crumbly topping combining all-purpose flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and cold butter is prepared by cutting the butter into the dry ingredients. This topping is chilled overnight as well.
When baking, the crumb topping is sprinkled evenly over the soaked bread before the casserole is baked at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 45 minutes to an hour, depending on desired softness. The result is a baked pudding with a custardy texture beneath a crisp, sweet topping.
The casserole is finished with a glaze made by mixing powdered sugar and a small amount of milk, drizzled over the warm dish, then garnished with fresh strawberries. This preparation is suitable for a rich breakfast or brunch and can be made ahead for convenience.
