Fruit Chaat (Fruit Salad with Chaat Masala)
Description
Fruit Chaat combines an assortment of fresh fruits cut into bite-sized pieces, including apples, pears, oranges, mangoes, strawberries, and grapes, with an optional addition of pomegranate seeds for extra color and tartness. The fruits are gently mixed with a blend of spices characteristic of chaat masala cuisine: black salt, cumin powder, chaat masala, and freshly crushed black pepper, enhanced by the acidity of lemon juice to prevent browning and brighten flavors.
This salad is best served chilled after refrigerating for a short while, allowing the spices to meld into the fruit without making it mushy. The fresh mint garnish contributes a cool, herbal aroma and flavor, enhancing the overall freshness. Texturally, it offers crispness from apples and pears, juiciness from citrus fruits, and softness from strawberries, making it an interesting medley.
The seasonal nature of fruit selection is encouraged for freshness and cost-effectiveness, with flexibility to substitute or add fruits as desired. Some fruits, such as bananas, should be added close to serving time to avoid sogginess. This salad makes a lively, light addition to meals or snacks.
Ingredients
- 1 apple chopped
- 1 pear chopped
- 1 orange chopped
- 1 Mango chopped
- 5 strawberry cut into 4
- 1/2 cup grapes halved
- 1/4 cup pomegranate seeds optional
- 1/4 teaspoon black salt aka kala namak
- 1/4 teaspoon cumin powder roasted
- 1/2 teaspoon chaat masala add more to taste
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper freshly crushed
- 2 teaspoon lemon juice
- 6-8 mint chopped, leaves, Pudhina
Instructions
- Cut the apple, pear, orange and mango to bite size pieces. Cut each strawberry into 4, and grapes into half. In a large bowl, add all the fruits.
- Now add the black salt, cumin powder, chaat masala and black pepper. Sprinkle the lemon juice. Adding lemon juice prevents fruits from browning.
- Gently mix without mashing fruits. Refrigerate for 30 minutes to an hour.
- Garnish with mint leaves and serve. Fruit Chaat tastes great when served chilled.
Notes
- Use seasonal fruits for the best flavor and price, but most fruits can be substituted based on availability.
- Add bananas just before serving to prevent them from becoming mushy.
- Some fruits like apples and pears can be chopped ahead of time but store properly to minimize browning; toss with lemon juice when mixing.
- Refrigerate the chaat for 30 minutes to 1 hour before serving to allow flavors to meld.
